  • Florida Unschoolers does not have a physical building.
  • Children complete their assignments and courses in their own home or wherever else the parents deem appropriate, such as the Jacksonville zoo, a Putnam County public library, the Fountain of Youth (St Augustine), the home of a study partner (under parental supervision), a swimming pool (for a physical education course in swimming), Ravine Gardens and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (pictured).

Curriculum

  • Parents of children enrolled in a private school, including Florida Unschoolers, do not report to their county's public School Board.
  • Parents design their child's curriculum and are free to design it as they determine is best for their child.
  • High school curriculums may be designed to prepare the student to enter a skilled occupation immediately upon high school graduation or to enter college.
  • The curriculum includes courses the parents choose, such as English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Parents name the courses (e.g, Math 9 or Algebra). Parents can supplement the core curriculum with courses such as Religion, Art, Music, Physical Education, Sign Language, etc.
  • Courses can integrate books, pen/pencil and paper, computer/laptop/tablet, YouTube videos, field trips (e.g., museum, zoo, national monument, Wall Street,  foreign country), and projects (e.g., plant and tend a vegetable garden, create a video game).

  • In lieu of creating a curriculum, parents may utilize part of all of a curriculum that has already been created by a company / organization or even another parent. A few popular curriculums are:

  1. Khan Academy - Free - Online - Over 200 online courses - In a recent study, students were over twice as likely to meet grade-level standards with Khan Academy than with traditional public school.
  2. Florida Virtual School - Free - Online - Over 200 online courses.
  3. A.C.E. School of Tomorrow - Low-cost - Booklet and online options - Parent purchases booklets for their child to complete and then the parents grade their child's work with keys - Biblical principles are woven throughout the A.C.E. curriculum with an emphasis on Scripture memory.
  4. The Peaceful Press - Low-cost - Books (not online) - through 6th grade only. Based on the philosophies of Maria Montessori and Charlotte Mason.Parents can mix and match curriculums. For instance, parents could have their child complete a course in Algebra via Khan Academy, a course in Religion via A.C.E. School of Tomorrow, enroll their child in a season of Archery with their local 4-H, purchase a Chemistry course (that comes with all the supplies to perform experiments), and design a course in Florida State Government that includes online articles, YouTube videos and a visit to the FL State Capital.

  • Parents choose how to assess their child's competence in each course. For instance, parents may  have their child complete standardized tests, write term papers, and/or complete projects.
  • Florida Unschoolers completes all of the child's administrative paperwork with the state of Florida.
  • Florida Unschoolers also provide parents templates for report cards, transcripts and diplomas.
