Sex Anomaly and Mental Disorder Comorbidities

  • Open to the following clinicians: PT, PTA, OT, OTA, SLP, MD. NP, PA, RN, LPN, LCSW, LMHC. 
  • For FL PTs and PTAs, this course satisfies the CE requirement for licensure renewal (except for a 2-hr Medical Errors course).
  • Other clinicians must obtain course approval from their respective state board.

Sex Anomaly and Mental Disorder Comorbidities Course Description:

This 22-hrs webinar course examines an array of sex anomaly disorders and mental illness disorders with which a PT patient may present as comorbidity. As part of the course, we discuss common medical interventions provided to patients with a variety of sex anomaly and mental illness disorders. We also explore the implications of a variety of sex anomaly disorders and mental illness disorders on the provision of physical therapy. Case scenarios of patients with one or more of these disorders are interwoven throughout the course.

Course Objectives. In this course we:

  1. examine a variety of sex anomaly disorders with which a therapy patient present as a comorbidity - to include Klinefelter's syndrome, XXYY syndrome, Turner syndrome, Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS), Swyer syndrome, de la Chapelle syndrome and ambiguous genitalia;
  2. explore common medical interventions provided to patients with a variety of "sex disorders" and explore their implications on physical therapy;
  3. explore strategies patients use to self-address a variety of sex disorders;
  4. examine a variety of mental illness disorders with which a physical therapy patient present as a comorbidity - to include disorders of adult personality and behavior, including organic disorders such as dementia; mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use; delusional disorder such as schizophrenia; mood disorders such as depression and bipolar affective; neurotic disorders such as anxiety and somatoform disorders (e.g., body dysmorphia); behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors such as eating disorders; disorders of adult personality and behavior such as gender identity disorders and disorders of sexual preference. 
  5. explore common medical interventions provided to patients with a variety of mental health disorders, including psychotropic medications and mental health therapy and their implications on physical therapy;
  6. explore strategies patients use to self-address a variety of "sex disorders" and mental disorders
  7. discuss how "sex disorders" and mental illness comorbidities can impact a patient's ability to participate in, progress , and benefit from the physical therapy.

Teaching and learning methods include lecture, discussion, and small group and whole group case scenarios.

Sex Anomaly and Mental Disorder Comorbidities

Some of the sex anomaly disorders this course examines are Klinefelter's syndrome, androgen insensitivity syndrome, congenital malformations of genital organs. Some of the mental disorder comorbidites are abuse of non-dependence producing substances; neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders (such as body dysmorphia); mood disorders; disorders of adult personality and behavior including gender identity disorder of childhood, transsexualism and Munchausen  syndrome by proxy).
