Bottom Line: Do not refer a patient - especially a patient with a medical diagnosis such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, etc. to a nutritionist. If the patient requires nutrition education beyond your competency level,  refer him/her to his/her physician to obtain a referral to a registered dietician.

WHOLE-FOOD PLANT-BASED FAT LOSS DIET (pages 174-175)

 The “most effective nutritional diet for weight loss and maintaining a lower body-weight is the whole food, plant-based diet” (Greger, 2020).  In fact, those who eat a predominantly plant-based diet weigh less, up to 30 lbs. less, than the general population (Greger, 2020). Despite the significant research that has found that vegetarian /vegan/whole-food, plant-based diets are effective in preventing and reversing obesity, plant-based diets continue to be largely un-embraced by Americans and under-prescribed by our physicians.   

Although there is sufficient evidence the WFPB diet promotes fat / weight loss with-out having to purposefully reduce caloric intake, an alternative is to both adhere to a WFPB diet and introduce a modest caloric deficit.
