WELLNESS & HOLISTIC PT SEMINAR

DESCRIPTION:

To open this 12 credit hour continuing education seminar, we apply wellness to the APTA Patient/Client Management Model. We demonstrate how a physical therapist can examine physical activity wellness and body composition wellness as well as screen medical wellness (including nicotine dependence and alcohol abuse), nutritional wellness and mental and social wellness. We explain how to best utilize the results of the wellness examination to determine realistic outcomes / goals and design an appropriate intervention plan. Included in this skill set is the ability to discern the clinical indications to refer a patient to another discipline and possibly even discontinue physical therapy. 

During the next component of the seminar, we examine the "component" models of wellness and the Model of Life Wellness (MLW). We then discuss Motivational Interviewing and explore the Change Model (including the stages of incognizance, pre-contemplation, contemplation, recognition, preparation / planning, action, maintenance and permanent maintenance - as well as the concepts of lapse and relapse). We next apply the Model of Life Wellness, Motivational Interviewing, and the Change Model in case scenarios.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this 12 hour continuing education seminar you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to examine and/or screen various components of wellness, including physical activity wellness, nutritional wellness, sleep wellness, etc.  
  2. Evaluate the results of a wellness examination / screen and then design an appropriate intervention plan. 
  3. Given a patient case scenario, determine if it is appropriate to make a referral to another discipline. 
  4. Discuss various wellness models, particularly the Model of Life Wellness (MLW).  Describe Motivational Interviewing and the Change Model, including the concepts of lapse and relapse. 
  5. Compare traditional (mainstream) and alternative (non-mainstream) medicine and describe how traditional physical therapy and complementary interventions fit into the big picture. 
  6. Discuss the PT Scope of Practice, particularly as it relates to CAM (Complementary Alternative Medicine). 
  7. Describe the process of how to determine if a CAM intervention is within the PT Scope of Practice or not.  
  8. Review the basics of nutrition.  Summarize "mainstream" nutritional practices, including meat-based diets. 
  9. Discuss plant-based nutrition and cite evidence in support of the benefits.   Describe moxibustion and summarize research that supports or refutes its efficacy.  
  10. Discuss medical marijuana and CBD and cite evidence in support of their uses and efficacy. 
  11. Discuss common herbal supplements and summarize research that supports or refutes the efficacy of each. 
  12. Identify which biology-based CAM interventions are within the PT Scope of Practice, which are not and why.  
  13. Discuss how physical therapists can integrate biology-based CAM in their daily practice and thereby provide more holistic care to their patients.  
  14. Discuss acupuncture and acupressure (including the concepts of meridians and acupoints) and identify the indications, pre-cautions, contraindications, and benefits of each.  
  15. Discuss and compare the various types of cupping (dry cupping, cupping with fire, cupping massage, wet cupping) as well identify the indications, pre-cautions, contra-indications, and benefits.  
  16. Describe Gua sha (aka scraping) and trigger point and identify their indications, precautions, contraindications, and benefits. 
  17. Identify those body-based CAMs whose efficacy is supported by empirical evidence and are within the PT Scope of Practice and those that are not. 
  18. Discuss how physical therapists can integrate body-based CAM in their daily practice and thereby provide more holistic care to their patients.  
  19. Discuss the Qigong and Tai Chi, including similarities, differences, indications, pre-cautions, contra-indications, and benefits.  
  20. Discuss the Pilates and Yoga, including similarities, differences, indications, pre-cautions, contra-indications, and benefits.  
  21. Discuss sleep, including the sleep cycle and the importance of "quality" sleep as well as strategies to improve sleeping patterns. 
  22. Identify those body-based CAM interventions whose efficacy are supported by empirical evidence and are within the PT Scope of Practice and those that are not.  
  23. Discuss how physical therapists can integrate mind-body integration CAM in their daily practice and thereby provide more holistic care to their patients.  
  24. Using case case scenarios, demonstrate the ability integrate wellness concepts into the provision of PT. 
  25. Throughout the seminar, examine your own self-wellness and discuss the ability to serve as a positive wellness role model. 

HOLISTIC PT CERTIFICATION

The prerequisites for enrolling in the certification course are: (1) completion of the Wellness & Holistic PT seminar,  (2) at least two years of practice as a full-time physical therapist (or the equivalent in part-time or PRN practice). Once enrolled in the certification course itself, the physical therapist will demonstrate his/her ability to integrate wellness and holistic concepts into the practice of physical therapy. This demonstration includes the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of knowledge. The 12-hr CEU certification process consists of the following:

  1. Cognitive domain: A 50 min questions/answer and discussion of general subject matter related to wellness and holistic physical therapy.
  2. Cognitive and Psychomotor Domains: (a) A 50-min presentation by the physical therapist demonstrating a complementary intervention of her/his choosing (e.g., nutritional education, herbal medicine (e.g., medical marijuana and CBD), cupping, acupressure, trigger point, yoga, tai chi, meditation, medication teaching and smoking cessation).(b) A 50-min discussion regarding of the efficacy of the intervention including an overview of references.
  3. Cognitive and Psychomotor Domains: (a) A 50-min presentation by the physical therapist demonstrating a complementary intervention of her/his choosing;(b) A 50-min discussion regarding of the efficacy of the intervention including an overview of references.
  4. Cognitive and Psychomotor Domains: (a) A 50-min presentation by the physical therapist demonstrating a complementary intervention of her/his choosing;(b) A 50-min discussion regarding of the efficacy of the intervention including an overview of references.
  5. Cognitive and Psychomotor Domains: (a) A 50-min presentation by the physical therapist demonstrating a complementary intervention of her/his choosing;(b) A 50-min discussion regarding of the efficacy of the intervention including an overview of references.
  6. Cognitive and Psychomotor Domains: (a) A 50-min presentation by the physical therapist demonstrating a complementary intervention of her/his choosing;(b) A 50-min discussion regarding of the efficacy of the intervention including an overview of references.
  7. Affective Domain: A 50 min (informal) discussion of how the physical therapist integrates wellness into his/her own life and serves as a role model to his/her patients. The certification components are one-on-one with the President of the Wellness Society, and the days of times are to be scheduled directly with her.
